My Favourite Home School Drinks

Here we are again… back to lockdown and home school. By the time we reached our second lockdown, this was all getting pretty old and I honestly didn’t think we’d be switching back to school from home- but now here we are!

The days feel long, lonely and often boring, especially when I have school from 8.30-3.00, so it’s hardly any surprise that I have trouble staying motivated and on task a lot of the time! To all you year-round home schoolers out there- oh how I admire you and your perseverance!!

Anyway, to get me through the days I’ve been trying to come up with ways to help me stay focused, so I thought it would be fun to share a post about my how I do this.

My number one game-changer? Staying hydrated!

I have found recently that it really, truly does help me pay attention if I am full of water and other liquids. I try to drink lots of water throughout the day, but also to have other drinks now and again to mix things up and keep them interesting! So, in this post, I’ll be sharing my top four home school drinks (other than water, of course). Let’s get right into it!

Fruit Smoothie

This drink is oh-so refreshing (definitely helps to keep me awake) and unbelievably delicious! My mom tends to keep a constant supply of frozen fruit in our freezer, so we always have something to hand which I can whip up with some yoghurt or milk to create a delicious fruit blend!

A few of my favourite fruit combinations are:

– Mixed berries and banana

– Kiwi, banana, raspberries, cranberry juice

– Blueberries, peach and fresh banana

Once I’ve picked my fruits, I’ll throw them all in the blender, along with some milk or yoghurt, blend up and then enjoy!

Whipped Coffee

Heyo! Remember this awesome trend from back in spring? The beautifully creamy whipped coffee on top of the icy cold milk? Pure heaven, I tell you! Some days it’s a little cold for this beverage, but other days its honestly just too good to resist! And man, it’s SO easy to make! It took me a few tries to get it right at first, but now its one of my firm favourites!

Since it’s so simple to make, I’ll quickly share the directions:

Ingredients:

– Instant coffee (powdered works best)

– Sugar

– Hot water

You need these ingredients in a 1:1:1 tablespoon ratio- when I make mine I use 2 tbsp of each, but you can definitely make it using just 1 tbsp of each… or more if you want more!

Then all you need to do is pour your three ingredients into a bowl and whip up. I whip mine in our KitchenAid mixer because I have found this is much easier than whisking it by hand, but hand whisking does work too- it just takes longer.

Whip until you have stiff peaks, pour on top of iced milk and enjoy!

Hot Chocolate

One of the things I hate SO much about this lockdown is that it’s winter right now… not summer! I hate feeling cold and having to wear layers or put the heating on. I think it’s fair to say I’m a summer gal through and through!

But, I do love a good hot chocolate too warm me up during the winter. I like to drink this towards the end of the home school day- just to keep me going for my final class or so.

Now, I don’t have a set recipe for saucepan hot chocolate, I tend to just throw in some unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, milk, water, vanilla and cinnamon, and then adjust to taste. You will definitely be able to find a better recipe online somewhere, or otherwise just use premade hot chocolate powder.

Either way, this drink is dreamy and warming- perfect for a cold, wintery afternoon of working from home!

The *occasional* take-out-treat

I don’t know about you, but I love a cheeky take out from Starbucks on the odd occasion! I really do think that if I could live purely off Starbucks, I would. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s a great idea, so I’ll stick with the occasional takeaway!

But seriously, having a take out coffee is such a lovely treat and helps motivate me through the rest of the day (as well as keep me awake haha). I admit, it’s probably not the healthiest home school drink, but it’s definitely worth it every now and again.

My favourite Starbucks drink at this time of the year is for sure their gingerbread latte, but I think the seasonal menu is over now, so back to vanilla lattes it will be for the remainder of the cold months.

It’s silly I know, but I get so excited with a fun takeout that it sometimes gives me the little boost I need to finish the home school day and push through to 3 pm!

So there you have it! My favourite four home school drinks for the dreary, tiring days at home. I hope some of these ideas might help to keep you motivated through the day! What are your favourite drinks at the moment?

Happy drinking!

  1. Great ideas Megan!! It’s so funny, when I’m doing work at my desk I tend to drink a lot more water because its just literally right there! 🤣 I love fruit smoothies! And hot chocolate is DEFINITELY my favorite hot drink! I’m sorry about lockdown, it must be hard. 😔 I hope you’re still able to find joy in the stage you’re at now, too! *hugs* 🤗 Love ya!
