Your Will Be Done

Okay, so here’s a fact about me: I am one of those people who always needs to know the plan.

When I say always, I mean 120% of the time.

Whether it’s a leisurely day in the summer or a busy Saturday afternoon, I need to know the exact movements of every member of my family and the precise timings of the day- virtually to the minute! But, it doesn’t just stop there! If there is no plan, I will make one, and if I can’t make one, I start to stress!

Therefore, it is understandable that my #1 stress in life is the great unknown that is my future. I have these very specific dreams for what I want my future to look like… get married young, have kids before 30, live in the Midwest in a big house with a front porch and maybe even a pool… you know the drill. But, whilst I have these very specific dreams, I don’t have any actual plans. I don’t know if I want to go to college, or what I want to study, or how I’m going to earn money. There is no certainty about my future.

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person who stresses about the future. Who has the next fifty year of their life planned out like a dream but still has no clue where they’re really going.

And the thing is, if when we become obsessed with planning out these perfect futures for ourselves, we’re only going to be disappointed. We’re not going to get the most out of life because something will always be wrong. There will always be something that goes against the plan.

I’ve learnt that the hard way this past year. I’ve set unrealistic, specific plans for my life, and when things haven’t gone according to those plans, I’ve been disappointed. But I’ve been learning over the past few months to surrender my plans and my dreams to Jesus because He knows the real plan for my life.

Friend, Jesus has SO. MUCH. MORE. in store! When we surrender the steering wheel of life to Jesus Christ, that is when we begin to have life to the full. (John 10:10). Jesus’ ways are higher, His plans are better and in Him, we can have life and have it abundantly!

I recently watched a little clip where the speaker was talking about surrendering our lives to Jesus, and she touched on how doing this is a daily act. Every day, we need to get up, choose Jesus and pray, ‘Lord, YOUR will be done’. Praying that is not a once in a lifetime decision. It’s not the prayer you pray the day of your baptism or on the day you give your life to Jesus. No, praying ‘Lord, your will be done in my life’ is a prayer we need to pray daily.

We have to give God full control- we need to go wherever He leads and do whatever He asks. When we do that, that is when we begin to have life to the full. It sounds scary. I get it, and I find it scary too. But it really is true, sweet friend, that life in Jesus is one million times better than life in the flesh could ever, ever be.

When we lose our life for Jesus, what we find is infinitely, infinitely more than we ever would have expected. When we bow down before our Lord and Saviour and pray, ‘Lord, your will be done’ and not ‘Lord, my will be done’, we begin to find true satisfaction. And when we seek the Kingdom of God before anything else, absolutely everything we need will be given to us.

God’s plans are not just good. They are better. They are infinitely better than anything, absolutely anything at all, that we could ever possibly imagine or hope for.

So, sweet friend, pray with me:

‘God, your ways are higher. Your plans are better, I know that full well. I choose to surrender my hope and dreams to you, let your will be done in my life.’ Amen.

  2. I always enjoy reading and reflecting on your beautiful, life giving posts. Thank you for bringing encouragement and wisdom to my days Megan! xx

It is so true that we must surrender our imagined plans to God because He will always find a way to bring what is destined for us into fruition. It will be more spectacular than any life we as humans could imagine. What an example of grace and love. God saying that we need not bear the burden of knowing everything and having such an immense weight on our shoulders. It’s funny how, in hindsight, the most complicated of situations with these crazy twists and turns work out perfectly. Whether it’s through teachable moments or divine timing, it’s just amazing.

Hope you’re well gorgeous girl, sending lots of love and light your way <33

It really is true that however good our imagined plans might be, God’s will always be better! And so love how you put it that even ‘the most complicated of situations with these crazy twists and turns work our perfectly’. God doesn’t give up on us. His plans are good and He knows better! And I just love that!

  3. I totally can relate. I like knowing the plan.. and if there isn’t a plan, I feel like I need one! Surrender is something I think we all need to work on, no matter where we are in life.

    1. I’m so glad you can relate, Haley! And I 100% agree- i can’t imagine that many people ever really get it a stage in life where they have surrendered absolutely everything to the Lord- it’s definitely a process!!

  4. Loved this so much, Megan! I am definitely a planner as well! Someone recently said to me, “You pretty much have an agenda for every minute, don’t you?” And I had to agree, I like to have a plan for every second of my day, but the downside of that is I don’t like when my plans are changed, interrupted, or canceled. I have a really hard time with it. It’s hard for me to surrender my day to Jesus. To say, “I want your will, not mine.” Anyways thanks for reminding me that His ways are better, higher and much more fruitful than mine. ❤

    1. Thank you so much, Grace! And I totally get what you mean, that’s basically me too, haha!! It really is difficult to pray that His will be done and not our own, especially when we do have such a specific agenda planned out!
I’m glad this was a reminder for you, thank you for reading! 💛🤗
